Her options for a \u00a0\u00a0career were teacher, secretary, or nurse.\u00a0 She took classes in Business Administration.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1030\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1030\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165014-1-scaled-e1590458132277.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1030\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165014-1-scaled-e1590458132277-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165014-1-scaled-e1590458132277-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165014-1-scaled-e1590458132277-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165014-1-scaled-e1590458132277-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165014-1-scaled-e1590458132277-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165014-1-scaled-e1590458132277.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">About 1935<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She was active in college affairs.\u00a0 She was in the ETC Club, Press Club, and was feature editor of J-Tac (campus newspaper).\u00a0 I am surprised when I look at her yearbook and see that some friends gave her the nickname \u201cNutty.\u201d\u00a0 One student wished her luck as the next year\u2019s president of the Press Club.\u00a0 Another wrote, \u201cWell, nose for news Williams, you have to prove it next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I went through her possessions after her death, I found an acceptance letter for the University of Texas.\u00a0 It saddened me.\u00a0 It was the middle of the depression, and I knew money was not available.\u00a0 My Dad had a small dairy and a WPA job for the county.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, she went to Fort Worth and worked for Mitchell Cadillac Agency.\u00a0 By the time World War 11 started, she was working for Southwest Greyhound in the accounting department.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I thought Fort Worth was the largest city in the world. She lived in a fourplex on 8<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue with a friend from Breckenridge, Irene Wesley. They had an upstairs apartment with a balcony.\u00a0 I was intrigued by the balcony.\u00a0 I could look down on 8<sup>th<\/sup> Ave and watch the traffic.\u00a0 That was entertaining for a little country girl.<\/p>\n<p>I was with Dad in Fort Worth when he missed a turn and got lost.\u00a0 He spotted a motorcycle policeman sitting at the side of an intersection.\u00a0 He pulled up behind him, got out, and went to ask directions.\u00a0 A large, black car stopped at the intersection.\u00a0 There were two nuns in full habits in the car.\u00a0\u00a0 I was sure they were gangsters and was frightened. \u00a0I did not know whether to hunker down on the floor of the car or run to my Dad and the policeman.\u00a0 Fortunately, the light changed, the nuns drove on, and I did not have to decide.\u00a0 My Dad had a good laugh as he explained their dress to me.<\/p>\n<p>Greyhound buses were transporting military personnel.\u00a0 She was given a special assignment to locate where fuel was cheapest.\u00a0 Buses were then routed to those locations to refuel.\u00a0 Her efforts earned her a salary raise.\u00a0 She was the highest-paid female employee in the system. To avoid problems with other female employees, her salary was a secret.\u00a0 My parents knew but were told not to reveal it. No one knew until years later that her sneaky little sister also knew.\u00a0 She said, \u201cA female accountant does her work, half of the male\u2019s work who sits beside her, and makes half the salary.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1032\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1032\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165036-1-scaled-e1590458211401.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1032\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165036-1-scaled-e1590458211401-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165036-1-scaled-e1590458211401-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165036-1-scaled-e1590458211401-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165036-1-scaled-e1590458211401-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165036-1-scaled-e1590458211401-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200525_165036-1-scaled-e1590458211401.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1032\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1945<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A co-worker introduced Vaudine to her brother, Thomas Clifford (Jack) Jones.\u00a0 They were married in 1945.\u00a0 Roommate Irene had married and taken the apartment across the hall.\u00a0\u00a0 She and Jack lived in the apartment on 8<sup>th<\/sup> Ave until they built a house in Haltom City.\u00a0 They lived in the house until they both died.\u00a0 Jack had a salvage yard on NE 28<sup>th<\/sup> Street.<\/p>\n<p>She had been with Greyhound twenty years when the company moved its headquarters to Kansas City.\u00a0 She chose not to move.\u00a0 She was asked to help train the new employees.\u00a0 She had an apartment in Kansas City and all expenses paid. \u00a0She did that for a year.\u00a0 Jack\u2019s health was failing, and he was there with her most of the time.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, she was almost unemployable as she was female and past forty years of age.\u00a0 She did part-time work for several companies.\u00a0 The longest stint was bookkeeping for Leonard Farms.\u00a0 Eventually she was hired at Arlington State College (now University of Texas Arlington). She enjoyed her work there.\u00a0 She had responsibilities, but she said she did not have the constant pressure she had at Greyhound. She was bonded and accompanied by a security guard as she collected money taken in at various points on the campus.\u00a0 She described it as being a floating bank.\u00a0 She had an office in Hereford Hall, the university center.\u00a0 One<\/p>\n<p>duty she particularly enjoyed was arranging accommodations for celebrities who performed on campus.\u00a0 I remember she had a problem finding ungassed bananas requested by a popular female singer for her dressing room.\u00a0 She saw many changes and growth on the campus.<\/p>\n<p>After she had been there for twenty years, we received an invitation to a retirement reception.\u00a0 She was surprised that they sent invitations and kept saying, \u201cI have no idea what is planned.\u00a0 Most of them are cookies and punch affairs.\u201d\u00a0 She was pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed when we entered the event area.\u00a0 She remarked that it looked like a banquet, and then wondered if enough people would attend to eat all the food.\u00a0 She had friends among administrators, faculty, staff, and students.\u00a0 It was an elegant affair and well attended. She deserved it.<\/p>\n<p>She kept busy in retirement.\u00a0 She was active with church work and various projects she had not had time for earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Jack\u2019s health began to fail.\u00a0 He died in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Jack\u2019s sister lost her husband shortly after Jack died.\u00a0 She wanted Vaudine to go to a grief support group with her.\u00a0 She kept insisting until Vaudine finally went.\u00a0 Vaudine said, \u201cIf you are not depressed when you go in there, you will be when you come out.\u00a0 Those women can\u2019t even write checks.\u201d\u00a0 She did not go back.<\/p>\n<p>She and Jack always sat in certain chairs at the dining table.\u00a0 Looking at Jack\u2019s empty chair saddened her.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI fixed that.\u00a0 I moved over to his chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jack had leased the salvage yard. There was a large building on a lot behind their house.\u00a0 To say that Jack did not dispose of anything was an understatement.\u00a0 Our son, Charles, took on the monumental task of sorting things of value from worthless things.\u00a0 He was moving a pallet of concrete sacks.\u00a0 In the middle was a large container.\u00a0 When he opened it, he discovered it was filled with rolled silver coins.\u00a0 He and Vaudine put them in a safety deposit box at a bank.\u00a0 She had Charles\u2019 name on the box with hers.\u00a0 When Vaudine died, it was decided to get the coins out of the box.\u00a0 The boys, Ken, Charles, Kevin, and nephew Roger went to the bank with bags to retrieve them.\u00a0 Charles did the paperwork and they filled their containers.\u00a0 They walked nonchalantly through the lobby each carrying a bag of coins.\u00a0 They put them in the trunk of the car.\u00a0 Ken was carrying an old canvas overnighter of Jack\u2019s.\u00a0 As he lifted it into the trunk, the bottom fell out of it and coins rolled everywhere.\u00a0 They laughed at the thought of the scene they would have made if this had happened in the bank lobby.<\/p>\n<p>As Vaudine\u2019s health began to deteriorate, our niece Margaret who lived in the area, began to look after her.\u00a0 She helped with errands, doctor appointments, and other things. \u00a0\u00a0We were living in the Rio Grande Valley, 500 miles from Fort Worth.<\/p>\n<p>Vaudine was a stickler about annual health checkups.\u00a0 She began to have complaints.\u00a0 Tests were done but came back negative.\u00a0 She fell while walking in the neighborhood and was hospitalized.\u00a0 A nursing agency provided nurses 24 hours a day.\u00a0 Instead of getting better, she got worse and was again hospitalized.\u00a0 She had a mass on a shoulder that began to hurt.\u00a0 It was decided to biopsy it.\u00a0 It came back cancer.\u00a0 More tests found it in all major organs and her bones.\u00a0 It was beyond treatment.\u00a0 Margaret and I and her pastor were in the room when the doctor told her.\u00a0 She stoically accepted the diagnosis.\u00a0 Margaret thinks she was expecting it to be serious.\u00a0 She looked at her pastor, held out her hand to him, and said, \u201cI want you to ask the church and the ladies in my group to all pray that this will be quick and not long and drawn out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her doctor was adamant that I could not care for her at home.\u00a0 He gave Margaret and I a list of facilities.
