One morning in 2013, Ken was doing his outside chores and discovered a stray cat and a litter of kittens under a workbench in the barn.\u00a0 He fed her, and the kittens thrived.\u00a0 As the kittens grew older, the mother cat began to take them outside.\u00a0 One morning there was only one kitten.\u00a0 Ken searched the area, but he could not find any of the other kittens.\u00a0 He concluded that a predator had gotten them.<\/p>\n

The one remaining kitten followed Ken wherever he went in that area.\u00a0 It ran inside the barn whenever anyone else was there.\u00a0 The barn was always mice-free. The cat also roamed the pasture around the barn and became a hunter.\u00a0 Ken was the only one who could touch her.\u00a0 He even managed to take her to the vet.\u00a0 She did not come near the house at that time.\u00a0 She was definitely a barn cat and definitely Ken\u2019s cat.<\/p>\n

The cat was friendly with the dogs we had.\u00a0 About five years ago, our Catahoula, Daisy, was old and sick. She was listless on the weekend. We made plans to take her to the vet on Monday.\u00a0 Daisy left her bed in the garage and went to the front fence. Ken brought her back inside.\u00a0 Sometime during the next night, Daisy again went to the shrubbery at the front fence.\u00a0 That is where Ken found her the next morning.\u00a0 It had rained during the night, and Daisy was wet.\u00a0 The barn cat was beside her and she was also wet.\u00a0 The cat stayed beside the dog until the vet came and Daisy expired.<\/p>\n

Three years later, we bought a Weimaraner, Gray.\u00a0 As soon as he jumped out of the pickup, the barn cat ran.\u00a0 Instinctively, the dog ran after her.\u00a0 We had also taken our son Kevin\u2019s Schnauzer, Radar.\u00a0 He ran too.\u00a0 Ken had a huge challenge to stop the dogs from chasing the cat.\u00a0 It took a long period of time, but eventually, the cat and the two dogs tolerated each other.<\/p>\n

Cold weather was a problem.\u00a0 The dogs had insulated dog houses inside our insulated garage.\u00a0 When the temperature dropped below a certain degree, the dogs slept in our utility room.\u00a0 Three years ago, the weather was icy and colder than usual.\u00a0 Ken tried to get the cat to stay in the garage. She would not.\u00a0 He made her barn bed as warm as he could.\u00a0 It was so cold one night, he put her in the garage and closed the door.\u00a0 She decided that was not so bad!\u00a0 She became good friends with Gray and eventually began sleeping in his doghouse with him.<\/p>\n

The cat then began staying around the house. \u00a0She was still a hunter and wanted her fresh meat every day.\u00a0\u00a0 I was upset when she began to catch birds from the birdbath in our backyard.\u00a0 Ken told me, \u201cShe is only being a cat.\u201d\u00a0 To my dismay, she jumped high and caught a hummingbird.\u00a0 She once jumped high enough to grab the ring on the bottom of the feeder.\u00a0 She was holding stretched her full length before she fell.\u00a0 The feeders were raised higher.<\/p>\n

One year the cat brought Ken presents.\u00a0 The first one was a dead rattlesnake about 8 inches long with one button.\u00a0 She left it on the front walk.\u00a0 A few weeks later, she brought another slightly smaller one and left it in the driveway.<\/p>\n

When Ken died in December, she searched the property for him.<\/p>\n

Gray had cancer at that time.\u00a0 He was moved into the utility room.\u00a0 The cat would look in the room at him, but she did not enter.\u00a0 Gray was euthanized in February. \u00a0She roamed looking for him.\u00a0 She had lost her two best friends.<\/p>\n

In March, daughter Cynthia, left the utility room door ajar to check what the cat would do.\u00a0 The cat cautiously came inside and quickly ran back out.\u00a0 About five minutes later, she came in and checked out the spot where Gray had laid. This was repeated.\u00a0 Over a period of several days, the cat came further and further inside.\u00a0 Over a period of weeks, she has come inside to make a tour of the house before she goes out.<\/p>\n

The barn cat was transformed into a Garage cat.\u00a0 Her name was also changed.\u00a0 She had no official name earlier.\u00a0 She was only called Barn Cat.\u00a0 She is now \u201cMiss Kitty.\u201d<\/p>\n
