{"id":290,"date":"2014-12-15T02:42:14","date_gmt":"2014-12-15T02:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=290"},"modified":"2015-04-10T11:00:30","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T16:00:30","slug":"pearl-harbor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=290","title":{"rendered":"Pearl Harbor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December 7, 2014 was the 73<sup>rd<\/sup> anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>I decided several weeks ago to write about that day.\u00a0 Big Problem!\u00a0 I have no specific memories\u00a0of that day.\u00a0 I was in first grade and world events were not something I was concerned about.\u00a0 What to do?\u00a0 I decided to ask others what they remembered.\u00a0 This is a compilation of some things that friends and family members remember.*<\/p>\n<p>One of my classmates said that she heard her parents talking about it.\u00a0\u00a0The next day at school she could not stop crying.\u00a0 Everyone kept asking her why she was crying and she wasn\u2019t sure why.\u00a0 Finally someone asked if she thought that her Daddy was going to have to go to war.\u00a0 She said, yes, that was why she was crying<\/p>\n<p>A friend who grew up in San Antonio remembers that her family attended a church whose membership included military families from the bases in San Antonio.\u00a0 One member was a chaplain.\u00a0 Her family was home that afternoon when they saw the chaplain walking up to their house.\u00a0 She said her mother immediately said, \u201cSomething is wrong.\u201d\u00a0 The chaplain came in and told them about the attack.<\/p>\n<p>A friend from Breckenridge, Maurice Turner, posted this on Facebook two years ago.\u00a0 \u201cI grew up in Odessa and was in the first grade.\u00a0 We were driving around in our car, my parents and brother and sister.\u00a0 The radio said they were bombing our country.\u00a0 In my small mind I thought we could just all lay down and put catsup on us.\u00a0\u00a0When they flew over, they would think we\u00a0were dead and go home.\u201d\u00a0 Her husband Bobby grew up in Breckenridge and was in the third grade.\u00a0 He had a paper route and was delivering the Breckenridge American.\u00a0 A lady opened her paper and told him, \u201cSon this is old news.\u00a0 The United States was bombed today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of my cousins who grew up in a small west Texas town had been to a movie and was walking home when the town\u2019s main emergency siren\u00a0began to sound.\u00a0 It scared him.\u00a0 He expected emergency vehicles to pass. \u00a0Soon he began to hear the secondary sirens in other parts of town.\u00a0 When the sirens kept blaring and no vehicles went by, he became even more frightened and started running toward home.\u00a0 When he burst into the house, his mother was sitting in the living room crying. The radio was on.\u00a0 Her emotion scared him even more\u00a0\u00a0although he didn\u2019t realize the significance of what she began telling him.\u00a0 His Dad and an uncle were deer hunting.\u00a0 They decided to go into a nearby town and have a meal.\u00a0 His uncle was already in the military.\u00a0 The waiter asked if he was on the way back to his base.\u00a0 He replied no, he had a couple more days leave. \u00a0The waiter told them what had happened and that\u00a0all military personnel had been called back to their bases.\u00a0 His uncle immediately returned to Camp Bowie in Brownwood, TX.<\/p>\n<p>We owe eternal thanks to those who fought for our freedom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*All references used with permission.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 7, 2014 was the 73rd anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
