{"id":300,"date":"2015-01-20T20:04:43","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T20:04:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=300"},"modified":"2015-01-20T20:06:54","modified_gmt":"2015-01-20T20:06:54","slug":"tobacco-sack-quilt-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=300","title":{"rendered":"THE TOBACCO SACK QUILT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE TOBACCO SACK QUILT<\/p>\n<p>MADE FOR KENNETH STANDIFER<\/p>\n<p>BY HIS GRANDMOTHER, ALLIE STANDIFER COPE<\/p>\n<p>ABOUT 1939 OR 1940<\/p>\n<p>When Ken was a boy in Ada, Oklahoma, his Dad worked for the Frisco Railroad.\u00a0 Ken collected Country Gentleman tobacco sacks.\u00a0 His grandmother told him that if he could collect\u00a0enough sacks, she would make him a quilt.\u00a0 His Dad asked the railroad men to save their tobacco sacks for Ken.\u00a0 When they had a bundle of sacks they would let Ken\u2019s Dad know.\u00a0 Arrangements would be made for the little boy to stand by the tracks and wait for a specific train to pass.\u00a0 A man would toss the bundle to him as the train passed.<\/p>\n<p>He collected enough sacks to satisfy his grandmother.\u00a0 She took each sack apart at the side seams.\u00a0 She washed them and bleached half of them and dyed the other half red.\u00a0 She made this quilt and drew the \u201cCountry Gentleman\u201d in he center.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Country Gentleman Tobacco<\/p>\n<p>, Liggett\u00a0Myers Tobacco Company,<\/p>\n<p>Durham, N.C.
