{"id":327,"date":"2015-02-14T20:03:39","date_gmt":"2015-02-14T20:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=327"},"modified":"2015-04-09T21:53:31","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T02:53:31","slug":"valentine-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=327","title":{"rendered":"VALENTINE PROPOSAL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By the time Ken proposed to me in 1954 it was pretty well a given fact among family and friends that we would marry.\u00a0 \u00a0I did not know until years later that my mother had talked with him before she died in 1952 and asked him to take good care of me.<\/p>\n<p>We met in 1949.\u00a0 His sister, Dortha, sat beside me in the band.\u00a0 She asked me to ride with her to the out of town football game on Friday night.\u00a0 I stalled to see if some boy might ask me to sit with him on the band bus.\u00a0 My \u201csort of\u201d boyfriend at the time was not in the band and was not going to the game. \u00a0I finally accepted and\u00a0 time was set for them to pick me up.\u00a0 I had the impression that I was going with her and her Dad.\u00a0\u00a0Ken did not know that she had invited a friend until she gave her Dad directions to my house.\u00a0 She had claimed the front seat beside their Dad.\u00a0We still do not know how she maneuvered to get him to go to the door for me.\u00a0 I opened the door to this boy I did not know who said he was Dortha\u2019s brother.\u00a0 I noticed that she was in the front seat and was not too happy about it.\u00a0 We had been set up.\u00a0 Ken says that when I walked out the door he was overwhelmed and knew that he was going to pursue me.\u00a0 He can still make a good case for love at first sight.\u00a0 I was not on the same wavelength for a while.<\/p>\n<p>We were both students at North Texas State College (now NTSU) in 1954.\u00a0 His roommate had a brother in Kilgore who owned a jewelry store.\u00a0 He had been to Kilgore and bought a ring several months before Valentine Day.\u00a0 On February 13<sup>th,<\/sup> he went to Breckenridge to officially get my Dad\u2019s permission for us to marry.\u00a0 The only stipulation was that I finish college. \u00a0\u00a0On Valentine Day, we went to the little steak house in Ponder to eat and he proposed to me afterward.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150214_130834.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-325\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150214_130834-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"?????????????????????\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150214_130834-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150214_130834-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150214_130834.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were married in May, 1955, two days after he graduated.\u00a0 As they say, the rest is history.\u00a0 We will celebrate our 60<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary this year.\u00a0 I refer to him as my protector and keeper, and I thank God for him every day.\u00a0 God knew what he was doing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By the time Ken proposed to me in 1954 it was pretty well a given fact among family and friends that we would marry.&nbsp; &nbsp;I did not know until years later that my mother had talked with him before she died in 1952 and asked him to take good care of me.
