{"id":412,"date":"2015-04-08T21:11:32","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T02:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=412"},"modified":"2015-04-09T17:06:43","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T22:06:43","slug":"somewhat-wiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=412","title":{"rendered":"SOMEWHAT WISER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I gained experience working with students, I became more adept at anticipating their actions. The other clubs which I sponsored after leaving Fort Worth were Future Homemakers of America * clubs.\u00a0 In the sixties, I taught at Lincoln Junior High in Abilene, Texas.\u00a0 At that time, the 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade was in junior high.\u00a0 I taught freshman homemaking. \u00a0\u00a0On one trip, I took several girls to a district meeting in Stephenville, Texas.\u00a0 The meeting was\u00a0held on the campus of Tarleton State College (now University).\u00a0 We traveled in private cars to the meet and stayed in a local motel.\u00a0 One of my safety rules was no roaming around the motel late at night.<\/p>\n<p>Late in the evening one of my delegates called the room where another sponsor and I were staying.\u00a0\u00a0 She told us that some girls were roaming around the motel area.\u00a0 It\u00a0was\u00a0 their\u00a0\u00a0group consensus that a sponsor should know.\u00a0 Perhaps I had made my girls fearful that the college boys would be trolling for them.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think so, but I honestly don\u2019t remember what I told them about staying together and staying safe.\u00a0 At any rate, they felt\u00a0something should be done.\u00a0 Another reason could have been the circumstances of our day.\u00a0 Just before the first session began we received word that one of the groups from Abilene had been in a horrible accident.\u00a0 The sponsor and one student were killed. \u00a0 This saddened all of us.\u00a0 The entire Abilene group felt subdued that evening.<\/p>\n<p>I went out, found the girls, and began talking to them.\u00a0 They were chatty.\u00a0 They were just bored.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t resourceful enough to give me a reason for being out.\u00a0 They were bored and wanted to walk around for a time.\u00a0 They even told me their names and where they were from.\u00a0 Did I know that town?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t tell them that was my hometown.\u00a0 Instead, I asked them if they had permission from Mrs. T, their sponsor, to leave their rooms.<\/p>\n<p>There was silence, and then \u201cOh, do you know Mrs. T?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d\u00a0 And then to another girl, \u201cI also know your Mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed the shock for a minute before I told them how I knew this.\u00a0 I told them they needed to go back to their rooms and follow the rules. \u00a0They assured me they would. They asked if I was going to tell Mrs. T.\u00a0 I told them no.<\/p>\n<p>A decade later I had an FHA group at Georgetown High School.\u00a0 Another sponsor, Mrs. S., and I took some girls to a meeting in San Antonio.\u00a0 My girls were sophomores.\u00a0 Her girls were seniors.\u00a0 She was expecting them to disregard rules.<\/p>\n<p>We had a busy day.\u00a0 Her girls tried to escape the group a couple of times, but we foiled their efforts.\u00a0 After we left the evening meeting and socialized for a bit, we went to our rooms.\u00a0 She had placed the girls she was concerned about in a room adjacent to the\u00a0one she and I were sharing.\u00a0 I was sitting on my bed with my back to the wall.\u00a0 The girls were pretty loud.\u00a0 That was OK until I heard the words, \u201canother bottle.\u201d \u00a0We stopped our conversation and began seriously listening. \u00a0\u00a0One of the voices was definitely not female.\u00a0 I told her not only did they have alcohol but there was a boy in the room. The more I listened the surer I became.\u00a0 My partner was getting nervous.\u00a0 I told her that I would handle it.\u00a0 I put on a robe, picked up the phone and dialed the girls\u2019 room.\u00a0 When they answered, I said, \u201cThat boy has 5 minutes to get out of your room or all heck is going to break loose.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I promptly hung up.\u00a0 Then I stepped into the hallway beside their door.\u00a0 Sure enough, a tall, handsome cowboy came out.\u00a0 He had a sack with the bottle in one hand and a cowboy hat in the other.\u00a0 When he saw me, the hand with the bottle went over his heart and the hand with the hat covered it.\u00a0 He began to talk rapidly and started backing down the hallway. He told me he knew Georgetown well.\u00a0 His aunt and uncle lived there; I might know them; their names were ABC; they had XYZ business; he was just visiting with the girls, etc.\u00a0 All the time he was talking he was backing down the hallway toward the elevator.\u00a0 I was amused.\u00a0 He had the hopeful expression of someone wishing\u00a0that I would rush over and exclaim how glad I was to meet the nephew of the ABC\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0He made it to the elevator.\u00a0 We said a pleasant good night as he got inside.\u00a0 All was quiet the remainder of the night.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. S. had set down the rules\u00a0for the trip.\u00a0They included no alcohol and no boys in rooms.\u00a0\u00a0 She had told them if there were any problems, they would immediately return to Georgetown.\u00a0 I told her that I would have no trouble with her other girls as one of them was dating my oldest son.\u00a0 She took the offending girls and returned to Georgetown immediately after breakfast the next morning.\u00a0 Her other students became part of my group.<\/p>\n<p>The next assignment I had was the advisor to a Young Homemakers of Texas chapter.\u00a0\u00a0They were adults and I enjoyed working with all of them.\u00a0 Being their advisor was delightful.\u00a0 They did all of the work and I was there only if they needed me.<\/p>\n<p>* Notes:<\/p>\n<p>Future Homemakers of America is now Family, Career, &amp; Community Leaders of America<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln Junior High School is no longer in use<\/p>\n<p>Young Homemakers of Texas is no longer active<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I gained experience working with students, I became more adept at anticipating their actions.
