Long before we had cell phones, we had CB (Citizens Band) radios.\u00a0 Our family had one in every vehicle. The units were small and fit under the dash of the car or pickup. \u00a0The boys did some farming when they were in high school, and they had one in the cab of the combine. The boys also had a base unit in their bedroom. \u00a0Our daughter remembers that the call letters were KVE8936.\u00a0 These letters, or signs, were issued during the seventies.<\/p>\n
Users had nicknames and a lingo of their own.\u00a0 Our oldest son was Cadillac Cowboy and his brother was Wildfire.\u00a0 Our daughter was Goldilocks until she started college.\u00a0 Then she became Little Miss Priss.\u00a0 These nicknames were your \u201chandle.\u201d<\/p>\n
A dear friend brought her son and daughter for a visit in the mid seventies.\u00a0 We planned a day trip from Georgetown to Johnson City and the LBJ Ranch.\u00a0 Our two sons were working.\u00a0 This meant that we would be taking two girls and one boy.\u00a0 The boy was one unhappy guy.\u00a0 He was actually downright angry.\u00a0 He refused to go with all of those females.\u00a0 He really had no choice in the matter, but we did not want him sulking all day.\u00a0 We promised that he could sit between us in the front seat and have total use of the CB.\u00a0 He chose a handle, and we were off for the day. He actually enjoyed talking to the truckers.<\/p>\n
The return trip started with him talking immediately.\u00a0 On a whim, his mom said, \u201cLet me talk a while.\u201d\u00a0 She took the microphone, and in a low, sultry voice said, \u201cBreaker, Breaker.\u201d (I want to talk.)\u00a0 A trucker immediately asked her handle.\u00a0 She drawled, \u201cPeaches.\u201d\u00a0 He asked where she was going.\u00a0 She told him to \u201cthat Capitol City.\u201d (Austin) The conversation was on.\u00a0 She asked him his 10-20 (location).\u00a0 When he asked her for her 10-20, she gave a location behind him.\u00a0 He asked what she was driving, and she asked the same.\u00a0 He was driving a Bulldog (Mack truck).<\/p>\n
The girls in the back seat suddenly straightened up, looked at her, and then at each other with surprised expressions.\u00a0 Her daughter mouthed, \u201cOh my gosh, she is talking to a trucker.\u201d\u00a0 She definitely had their attention.\u00a0 Her son meanwhile, was about to have a convulsion trying to keep from laughing out loud.<\/p>\n
The trucker definitely wanted to meet her, and he told her where he would stop.\u00a0 She said it sounded good to her.\u00a0 We were not very far behind him.\u00a0 When we got to the designated stop, there was the big Mack truck with the driver sauntering around it.\u00a0 We whizzed right on by. We will never know how long he waited for Peaches to arrive.<\/p>\n
This gave Peaches confidence using the CB.\u00a0 Some time later, she went to San Marcos for a concert.\u00a0 On the return trip to her home in Houston, her headlights suddenly went out.\u00a0 She was about two hours from home.\u00a0 She got on the CB and two truckers answered.\u00a0 They put her car in the \u201crocking chair\u201d between their trucks and made sure she got to her exit safely.\u00a0 She was thankful for truckers and a CB radio that night.<\/p>\n
