{"id":699,"date":"2017-02-16T14:38:10","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T20:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=699"},"modified":"2017-02-16T14:57:58","modified_gmt":"2017-02-16T20:57:58","slug":"girl-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=699","title":{"rendered":"GIRL FRIDAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Enough has been written about Kate Bailey\u2019s accomplishments and long teaching career in Breckenridge.\u00a0 This is about my impressions and relationship with her.<\/p>\n<p>I learned early that the name Bailey was respected, if not revered, in Breckenridge.\u00a0 My birthday is in mid-September.\u00a0 My Dad consulted John Bailey regarding enrolling me in first grade at age 5 years, 11 \u00bd months.\u00a0 Mr. Bailey told him that I would \u201cdo better\u201d by having an extra year of maturity.\u00a0 His advice was followed without any further questions.<\/p>\n<p>I knew Mrs. Bailey taught senior English and that a passing grade was required in order to graduate.\u00a0 My older sister graduated before I was born.\u00a0 I knew that she had been a good student and got along well with Mrs. Bailey.\u00a0 I have no doubt that Mrs. Bailey gave her guidance in applying for a scholarship to John Tarleton and going to college.\u00a0 My brother entered her class five years later.\u00a0 He complained mildly that Mrs. Bailey expected him to perform as well as our older sister.\u00a0 He was not as studious or committed as our sister, but he got along well with Mrs. Bailey.\u00a0 Some of his classmates did not and felt she was too strict.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Bailey ruled her class with an iron hand and fear.\u00a0 When my husband entered her class on the first day of school in 1949, she immediately seated the students alphabetically.\u00a0 This put him in the last row.\u00a0 She walked around the class, pointed to his row, and said, \u201cGet your books, leave, and don\u2019t come back.\u201d\u00a0 He thought she was pointing at him.\u00a0 He was stunned.\u00a0 While he hesitated before reaching for his books, the boy in front of him got his books and left.<\/p>\n<p>By the time my class became seniors, John Bailey had suffered a heart attack.\u00a0 This seemed to mellow Mrs. Bailey.\u00a0 She had a substitute part of that year in order to care for him.\u00a0 It was a rough year for her and for me.\u00a0 She was dealing with her husband\u2019s failing health, and I was dealing with the terminal illness and death of my mother.\u00a0 No one was kinder to me that year than Kate Bailey.<\/p>\n<p>There was a large room used for a study hall in Breckenridge High School.\u00a0 There was a raised platform in the center of the west wall for the teacher\u2019s desk.\u00a0 This allowed the teacher a view of the entire room.\u00a0 I was scheduled for study hall the last period of the school day, and Kate Bailey was the teacher in charge.\u00a0 I immediately became her student assistant.\u00a0\u00a0 I checked attendance and posted the absentees in the proper place.\u00a0 If she had any errands, I was given instructions and dispatched. She often appeared tired, and my young legs afforded her the opportunity to remain seated.\u00a0 I gradually assumed more tasks. A student desk was often on the platform. \u00a0I would frequently be given an answer key to help grade papers.\u00a0 Eventually, I even had access to her grade book.\u00a0 This was after a discussion on confidentiality.\u00a0 I was very careful when recording grades and double checked them.\u00a0 I never divulged any of them.\u00a0 I am not sure any of my friends realized that I had that duty.\u00a0 I had an answer ready if anyone ever asked their grade before papers were returned or report cards issued.\u00a0 I was going to say, \u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d\u00a0 No one ever asked.<\/p>\n<p>Graduation time arrived.\u00a0 On the eventful evening, our class assembled and was ready to line up when instructed.\u00a0 The faculty was in front of us.\u00a0 I became aware that some of those closest to me were glancing from me to Mrs. Bailey.\u00a0 Then Mrs. Bailey left the front and started in our direction.\u00a0 My friends displayed broad smiles and parted.\u00a0 I looked around and started to step back also.\u00a0 Mrs. Bailey came to a stop directly in front of me.\u00a0 I noticed that she had a small gift wrapped box in her hand.\u00a0 It is an understatement to say that I was surprised when she handed it to me.\u00a0 My friends began to whisper, \u201cOpen it.\u201d\u00a0 Inside was a sterling silver lemon fork.\u00a0 Kate Bailey was beaming as were those around me.\u00a0 I learned that they were in on the secret.\u00a0 Mrs. Bailey had carefully explained to them that I had earned the gift for helping her.\u00a0 She wanted to be sure that they did not think she was \u201cplaying favorites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is a special treasure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_698\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-698\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215_204027.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-698\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215_204027-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215_204027-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215_204027-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215_204027-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">lemon fork<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note: \u00a0Both Kate and John Bailey are included in the blog entitled, &#8220;Senior Trips,&#8221; posted June 17. 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enough has been written about Kate Bailey&rsquo;s accomplishments and long teaching career in Breckenridge.&nbsp; This is about my impressions and relationship with her.
