I called to Ken to come take a look at the inside of my sister\u2019s secretary desk.\u00a0 I had broken a piece and hoped that he could fix it.\u00a0 He took one look, and without saying anything, removed the piece from the slot.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t even tell me that it was not broken.\u00a0 I knew from his look that I should have known that it was made to pull out.\u00a0 I have had the secretary since 1993, but had never tried to move anything that did not have a knob.<\/p>\n

There was something inside the slot.\u00a0 I carefully shook it out.\u00a0 I found a treasure.\u00a0 Inside was a little letter dated Dec. 28, 1924.\u00a0 It has a Necessity, Texas, postmark complete with a 2 cent stamp.\u00a0 It is addressed to my paternal grandmother in Ranger, Texas.\u00a0 The back flap reads “ans soon”<\/p>\n

My sister was 8 years old when she wrote it.\u00a0 Luna Mae was our aunt.\u00a0 She was 13 years old, and her mother had died 2 years earlier. She was living with my parents at the time. Jewell was a cousin who was 6 years old.<\/p>\n

I find it interesting that my sister told what the other girls got for Christmas but does not mention what she got.<\/p>\n

The letter reads as follows:<\/p>\n

Dec. 28, 1924<\/p>\n

Dear Grandmother,<\/p>\n

What are<\/p>\n

you doing now.<\/p>\n

I am not doing much of anything.<\/p>\n

Luna Mae got for Christmas a little comb two dresses \u00a0the one<\/p>\n

aunt audrey gave her was lavender\u00a0 the one aunt clara gave her was pink<\/p>\n

and both had bloomers to match.<\/p>\n

13 handkerchies one box of stationery<\/p>\n

a vanity some house shoes.\u00a0 I think<\/p>\n

that\u2019s all she got.\u00a0 I stayed all night with jewell Christmas night\u00a0 jewell<\/p>\n

got a doll bed a doll and a doll buggy and a 9 piec tea set<\/p>\n

I have to go to school in the morning.<\/p>\n

Mother and dady may come<\/p>\n

down soon.\u00a0 I cant go\u00a0 I have<\/p>\n

to go to school.\u00a0 I guess I had<\/p>\n

better get to bed, your loveing Grand<\/p>\n
