The move was one of those \u201cgo where the work is\u201d moves.\u00a0 Ken got a call that he was needed to start a new program.\u00a0 After some thought, he said yes.\u00a0 He also said to me that he would stay two years maximum.\u00a0 So we made a move and looked for a house to rent.\u00a0 Our youngest son moved into the house in Georgetown.<\/p>\n
We rented a temporary place and continued to look.\u00a0 There was a house for sale in the town where I had taken a teaching job.\u00a0 We were told by the realtor that renting was definitely not a possibility.\u00a0 Mr. Brown*, the owner, had died, and the heirs only wanted to sell.\u00a0 The house had been vacant for some time, and the grounds were in a state of disrepair.\u00a0 Grass and weeds were high, and it was looking dismal. \u00a0Ken decided to talk to one of the heirs anyway.\u00a0 Ken told him that he would clean up the grounds and take care of the house.\u00a0 After several weeks, we rented the house.<\/p>\n
The house was old and charming.\u00a0 It had large rooms and high ceilings.\u00a0 We fell in love with it.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t move furniture from Georgetown, so we went shopping.\u00a0 We bought some furniture, and it became home.\u00a0 There was a detached garage, and a yard man settled into quarters behind it.<\/p>\n
The two dogs even liked the place.\u00a0 It was not fenced.\u00a0 We staked the Weimaraner, and every day for a week, Ken walked her around the perimeter of the property.\u00a0 She seemed to sense that she was not to cross the line.\u00a0 After we stopped staking her, she left the yard one time.\u00a0 That time was to chase a German Shepherd down the driveway.\u00a0 Our daughter\u2019s poodle made the move also.\u00a0 He was a house dog, but he liked to sit outside.\u00a0 The property was several times the size of the yard in Georgetown.\u00a0 He sat outside and surveyed the wide world around him.<\/p>\n
After we had been in the house for several months, we were awakened one night by something on the roof.\u00a0 It was a loud, frightening sound like heavy footsteps. Ken ran outside.\u00a0 The yard man even heard it and also ran outside. \u00a0They went all around the house with flashlights and could not find anything. \u00a0The yard man even climbed a tree near a guard light that shone on the roof. \u00a0 It was alarming. \u00a0I am not sure that I slept the rest of the night.<\/p>\n
Ken was sure there would be tracks in the flower beds when daylight came.\u00a0 There were none.\u00a0 The house had a flat roof with a tar base and gravel. \u00a0We had heard a crunch on the gravel. \u00a0There was no evidence of anything having been on the roof.\u00a0 We could not think of an animal heavy enough to make enough noise to wake us up.<\/p>\n
Six or eight months later, the same thing happened again. \u00a0It was the same cadence of footsteps crunching on the gravel on the roof. \u00a0 They started heavy over the master bedroom and faded\u00a0away at the front of the house. \u00a0The two men searched for evidence and found nothing.\u00a0 It was a mystery.<\/p>\n
The third time that it happened, Ken and I woke up, looked at each other, and said, \u201cThere it is again.\u201d<\/p>\n
We decided that it was the ghost of Mr. Brown.<\/p>\n
