{"id":755,"date":"2017-04-27T20:14:27","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T01:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=755"},"modified":"2017-04-27T20:14:27","modified_gmt":"2017-04-28T01:14:27","slug":"there-is-no-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=755","title":{"rendered":"THERE IS NO CONNECTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-751\" style=\"width: 207px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Scan_Pic0002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-751\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Scan_Pic0002-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Scan_Pic0002-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Scan_Pic0002.jpg 531w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Margaret Ann Dalton and George Washington Williams<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When my sister was born in 1916, she had 10 living grandparents.\u00a0 One of them was our great-grandmother, Margaret Ann Dalton Williams.\u00a0 Margaret had married our great grandfather, George Washington Williams, when she was 17 years old.\u00a0 They lived in Missouri and came to Texas in a wagon train in 1869.\u00a0 By that time they had four children, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Richard who was our grandfather, Sallie, and Eliza.<\/p>\n<p>They settled in Parker County near the Brazos River.\u00a0 She had 5 more children, but one died in infancy.\u00a0 The youngest was 17 when George W. died in 1879.\u00a0 She had been a widow for 18 years when my sister was born.\u00a0 She lived to age 88.\u00a0 My sister was 13 when she died, and my sister had many fond memories of her.\u00a0 She called her Grandma.<\/p>\n<p>My sister told me anytime anyone asked Margaret Ann if she was related to the outlaws, the Dalton Gang, her standard reply was a curt, \u201cThere is no connection.\u201d\u00a0 Everyone took her word for it until her sister from Missouri came to visit. \u00a0My sister described Margaret Ann as a rather small, soft spoken woman.\u00a0 Her sister was a large, loud, woman.\u00a0 The biggest shock to my sister was that the sister called Grandma by the nickname, Meg.\u00a0 My sister said that Grandma\u2019s sister would say, \u201cWhy Meg, you mean you have never told them that you are kin to the Dalton Gang?\u201d\u00a0 Then she would let loose with a boisterous laugh.\u00a0 Our grandmother would get mad and vehemently deny it.\u00a0 Her sister would laugh even louder.\u00a0 Our grandmother was so mad that her children were afraid to approach the subject.\u00a0 Even after her sister left, no one dared to ask her about it.<\/p>\n<p>After her husband died in 1898, Margaret Ann ran a boarding house across the street from the train station in Brazos Texas. She carried a .32, 5 shot revolver in her apron pocket because \u201cthere was so much meanness\u201d in those days.\u00a0 Supposedly, the word around the area was, \u201cdon\u2019t mess with the widow Williams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My cousin tells me that his Dad (My Dad\u2019s brother) told him about our grandfather taking him to Ranger to meet Emmett Dalton*. \u00a0Emmett was in Ranger to meet some of his Dalton relatives.\u00a0 Our grandmother was very upset and did not want our grandfather to take her son around \u201cthat Dalton trash.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0My uncle remembered Emmett as an older man with gray hair.\u00a0 He was very well dressed and very friendly, but he sat with his back to a wall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/20170319_172726-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-752 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/20170319_172726-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/20170319_172726-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/20170319_172726-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/20170319_172726-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Margaret Ann died in 1929 and is buried just east of Lipan, Texas, in Parker County.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Emmett was the youngest of the Dalton Boys.\u00a0 Their careers as train and bank robbers ended in 1892, in Coffeyville, Kansas, when all of them except Emmett were killed.\u00a0 Emmett was sentenced to life in prison, but he was pardoned after serving 14 years of his sentence.\u00a0 He moved to Oklahoma and became a peace officer.\u00a0 He later moved to California.\u00a0 The story is that there were two brothers, and one moved to the western part of Missouri.\u00a0 The gang descended from this brother.\u00a0 .\u00a0 Our grandmother was descended from the brother who stayed in the eastern part of the state (St. Francis County).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; When my sister was born in 1916, she had 10 living grandparents.&nbsp; One of them was our great-grandmother, Margaret Ann Dalton Williams.&nbsp; Margaret had married our great grandfather, George Washington Williams, when she was 17 years old.&nbsp; They lived in Missouri and came to Texas in a wagon train in 1869.&nbsp; By that time [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[209,210],"class_list":["post-755","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-other-things","tag-margaret-ann-dalton","tag-the-dalton-gang"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
