{"id":805,"date":"2018-02-13T12:25:14","date_gmt":"2018-02-13T18:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=805"},"modified":"2018-02-13T12:25:14","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T18:25:14","slug":"my-valentine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=805","title":{"rendered":"MY VALENTINE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ken proposed to me on Valentine\u2019s Day in 1954.\u00a0 We went to dinner at a steakhouse in Ponder.\u00a0 He proposed later that evening.<\/p>\n<p>We were both students at North Texas State College.\u00a0 (Now University of North Texas)\u00a0 Ken worked in the college library.\u00a0 He worked 100 hours a month for 30 cents an hour.\u00a0 This paid room and board for an apartment shared with three roommates.\u00a0 The brother of one roommate owned a jewelry store in Kilgore.\u00a0 The two of them went to Kilgore where Ken bought my engagement ring.\u00a0 He earned money to buy the ring during winter break of 1953 working as a night watchman on a drilling rig in Big Spring.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 1955, Ken got a job as a roughneck on a drilling rig west of Denton.\u00a0 He worked the 11 PM to 7 AM shift.\u00a0 This provided money to return to Kilgore and buy my wedding ring.<\/p>\n<p>Ken graduated from North Texas State on May 26, 1955. We were married two days later on May 28.<\/p>\n<p>We moved into a garage apartment in Abilene.\u00a0 It was two blocks west of Hardin Simmons University where I enrolled.\u00a0 I walked to classes.<\/p>\n<p>Ken worked for TP Coal and Oil.
