Ken and I were both at the church on time May 28, 1955.\u00a0 I was \u201ccool, calm and collected.\u201d\u00a0 The minister asked us to join right hands.\u00a0 I thought I had touched a block of ice.\u00a0 This unnerved me.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure Ken wouldn\u2019t freeze and fall over.\u00a0 A good friend and neighbor to my family waited with him before the ceremony.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI have never seen a more nervous groom.\u201d\u00a0 He began to relax during the reception.<\/p>\n

People have asked us the secret to staying together for 63 years.\u00a0 There is no magic formula.\u00a0 What works for one couple may not work for another.\u00a0 Love is what needs to be foremost for all couples. As responsibilities increase, it is necessary to make time for each other.\u00a0 Work schedules, children\u2019s activities, and other obligations make it necessary to reset priorities to focus on the relationship.<\/p>\n

Communication has always been important to us.\u00a0 I had little experience in resolving conflict.\u00a0 My siblings were teenagers when I was born.\u00a0 I basically grew up as an only child.\u00a0 Ken had five siblings.\u00a0 He was experienced in squabbling.\u00a0 We established a pattern of listening to each other\u2019s thoughts on a subject.\u00a0 We listened carefully knowing that we would have our turn.\u00a0 We preferred the word discussions rather than arguments.\u00a0 Some of our \u201cdiscussions\u201d went on for days, but never in anger. We learned to respect the other\u2019s opinions.<\/p>\n

This is still our pattern, although we know each other so well we can almost anticipate what the other is thinking.<\/p>\n

Relationships go through stages and change with time.\u00a0 Cooperation is necessary in each stage.\u00a0 It is especially important when raising children.\u00a0 When the children leave home, priorities again change.\u00a0 Different decisions are made when retirement comes.\u00a0 Another set of decisions have to be made with aging and failing health.\u00a0 Commitment is a necessity as couples enter and pass through each stage.<\/p>\n

A sense of humor and laughter are important.\u00a0 My advice is love, laugh, and enjoy each other.<\/p>\n
