We had an ice storm in February.\u00a0 As the temperature dropped outside, we appreciated the warmth inside.\u00a0 We reminisced about our comfort and how it had changed during our lifetimes.<\/p>\n

One of the early houses Ken remembered had two fireplaces. \u00a0One fireplace was in the living room.\u00a0 On the other side, it opened into a bedroom.\u00a0 This was the only heat in the house except for the butane cook stove in the kitchen.\u00a0 Ken\u2019s job every morning was to start the fire in the fireplaces.\u00a0 He brought the wood and kindling inside the night before so it was ready for the morning.\u00a0 These two rooms and the kitchen were the only warm rooms in the house.<\/p>\n

The house in Breckenridge where I grew up had a natural gas space heater in the living room.\u00a0 The bedroom doors were closed to keep the cold air out of the living room.\u00a0 Upon arising, I would dash into the living room and stand with my back toward the heater.\u00a0 Then I would turn and warm the front of my body.\u00a0 The kitchen was also warmed by the gas cooking stove.\u00a0 In 1941, the house was remodeled and enlarged.\u00a0 Space heaters were added to the bedrooms.<\/p>\n

The only cooling during the summer was open windows and oscillating fans.<\/p>\n

We built a house in Abilene (Texas) in 1960.\u00a0 It had a gas furnace for heat.\u00a0 An evaporative cooler was mounted on the roof for cooling.\u00a0 The ductwork had vents in every room.\u00a0 This greatly improved our comfort.<\/p>\n

Our houses in Arizona in the mid-sixties also had furnaces and evaporative coolers.\u00a0 We thought we had air conditioning.\u00a0 The evaporative coolers worked well in the desert.\u00a0 We realized the natives called them swamp coolers.\u00a0 Air conditioning was what we called \u201crefrigerated air.\u201d\u00a0 Evaporative coolers were not considered air conditioning.<\/p>\n

Our next move was to the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas.\u00a0 The climate was too humid for the evaporative coolers to be effective.\u00a0 Fans and window air conditioning units helped.\u00a0 One of our nephews said, \u201cThis is the only place I\u2019ve ever been where I step out of the shower and start sweating.\u201d\u00a0 Winters were mild and space heaters kept us comfortable.<\/p>\n

We moved to Georgetown, Texas, in 1972. \u00a0Our house was our first to have controlled heating and cooling.\u00a0 We are now accustomed to the warm and cool thermostat controlled temperature.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
