I have my dogs.\u00a0 My daughter has her cats.\u00a0 My cousin, Lanier, did not have a dog or cat to keep her company.\u00a0 She had a finch.<\/p>\n
She enjoyed her bird friend as much as others enjoy their four-legged animal friends.\u00a0 She would take the finch from the cage and talk to it as it perched on her finger.\u00a0 The little bird chirped back to her.\u00a0 The finch rode on her shoulder as she walked around her house. She enjoyed her finch.<\/p>\n
One afternoon when the bird had been out of the cage, she went to retrieve it and return it to its home.\u00a0 She could not find the finch.\u00a0 She walked through the house calling to the little bird. No happy chirps responded. She systematically searched each room.\u00a0 She began to fear her pet had flown out the open door when she went into the yard.\u00a0 She made another sweep through the house.\u00a0 In a panic, she went outside and scoured the yard looking in all of the bushes and trees. She did not find the finch.\u00a0 She began checking the neighborhood.\u00a0 She feared the finch had flown away and gotten lost.\u00a0 She did not allow herself to think one of the neighborhood cats had feasted on it.\u00a0 Finally, she gave up the search.\u00a0 She went back inside and dejectedly stared at the empty cage.<\/p>\n
She missed her bird.\u00a0 Sadly she put the cage in storage.<\/p>\n
Months later, Lanier opened a little-used storage closet.\u00a0 Something fell off a shelf when the door opened.\u00a0 \u00a0She looked down to see what had fallen.\u00a0 The finch was at her feet.\u00a0 She gently picked up the dead bird. There was no odor.\u00a0 It was completely mummified.<\/p>\n
She brought the cage out of storage and decorated it.\u00a0 She attached the finch to the perch and hung the cage in its earlier position.\u00a0 She had her finch back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
