{"id":867,"date":"2018-08-30T13:55:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T18:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=867"},"modified":"2018-08-31T12:26:50","modified_gmt":"2018-08-31T17:26:50","slug":"uncle-david","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/?p=867","title":{"rendered":"UNCLE DAVID"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I never called him uncle in my life.\u00a0 David Haskins was my mother\u2019s half-brother.\u00a0 He was 5 years older than me.\u00a0 I thought he was an adult who knew everything.\u00a0 I followed him like a puppy.<\/p>\n<p>David lived in a community called Coryell City near Gatesville, Texas.\u00a0\u00a0 He went to school in Gatesville.\u00a0 He arrived by bus in Breckenridge the day after school closed for summer vacation.\u00a0 He stayed until the day before school started.\u00a0 He wanted to stay with my parents.\u00a0 I remember him crying as he boarded the bus to return home.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-860\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165522.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-860\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165522-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165522-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165522-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165522.jpg 1932w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 161px) 100vw, 161px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David and pet coon, Coryell City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>David had a pet raccoon. He found it alone in the woods and raised it.\u00a0 It ran free in the house during the day.\u00a0 At night it was caged because it was adept at opening cabinet doors and drawers.\u00a0 I thought having a coon was as exotic as having a circus animal.<\/p>\n<p>There was a small pond behind the house in Breckenridge.\u00a0 One summer there was very little rain and the pond began to dry up.\u00a0 David decided to move the few fish from the pond to a tank nearby.\u00a0 He had a bucket of water to transfer the fish.\u00a0 I followed to the edge of the pond, removed my shoes, and stepped into the mud.\u00a0 I did not go into the water.\u00a0 I don\u2019t recall him removing fish, but he discovered snakes.\u00a0 I picked up my shoes and retreated to the house and observed from the backyard. \u00a0\u00a0He killed the snakes.\u00a0 He poked a wire through their heads and attached them to a low tree limb.\u00a0 There were several snakes hanging in a row.\u00a0 I was about 6 or 7 years old.\u00a0 This was the epitome of bravery.\u00a0 In my eyes, he could have been a big game hunter.<\/p>\n<p>As David entered his teens, he spent more time with my dad and my brother helping around the dairy.\u00a0 I developed other interests and was less absorbed in his activities, but he remained a part of our family.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-862\" style=\"width: 106px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165701.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-862\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165701-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165701-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165701-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165701.jpg 1932w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 106px) 100vw, 106px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1945-46 school picture<br \/>Gatesville High School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of my cousins came to the dairy after World War 11.\u00a0 He had what was then called \u201cshell shock.\u201d\u00a0 He painted every day.\u00a0 David painted alongside him.\u00a0 I have a vivid memory of them both on ladders applying another coat of paint to the barn.\u00a0 David was in high school.\u00a0 He painted all summer.\u00a0 He had to return home a few weeks early for football practice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-861\" style=\"width: 157px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165531.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-861\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165531-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165531-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165531-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180825_165531.jpg 1932w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 157px) 100vw, 157px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Painting the barn, Breckenridge<br \/>about 1945<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After David graduated from high school, he joined the Air Force.\u00a0 He married and his first child was born before his discharge in 1952. There was a short period of time when he could not take his family with him.\u00a0 He brought them \u201chome\u201d to Breckenridge to stay with us until he could send for them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were years we both were involved with our families and work and only saw each other at family reunions or funerals.\u00a0 These occasions were catch up times.<\/p>\n<p>David was living in Dallas working as an industrial technician when he moved his mother to Dallas to look after her.\u00a0 She lived two houses down from his family.
