When she was eight years old, her parents, William Rankin and Avis McCreary, joined the Grindstone Branch of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church by letter.\u00a0 The year was 1871<\/p>\n<p>I first saw the little church in 1956. \u00a0I attended the funeral of my great-uncle, George C. Williams, with my dad.\u00a0 The church was full, and we stood with the crowd gathered outside the church.\u00a0 G.C. Williams was buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church. There are several Williams relatives buried there.\u00a0 The church had been renamed Newberry Cumberland Presbyterian Church.\u00a0 It had been rebuilt in 1955.\u00a0 A fellowship hall was added in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>This year was the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the church. Mary Maxwell encouraged my family to attend the annual homecoming in September.\u00a0 We were among 100 attendees.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_897\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-897\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/20180923_121123.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-897\" src=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/20180923_121123-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/20180923_121123-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/20180923_121123-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loosestringsfromthepast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/20180923_121123-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newberry Cumberland Presbyterian Church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mary Maxwell wrote this account of the day:\u00a0 \u201c150 years ago our ancestors donned their Sunday best, loaded their children and their food, even their cooking goods on their wagons.\u00a0 They made the trek to Grindstone Cumberland Presbyterian Church.\u00a0 When they arrived, they \u2018commenced\u2019 (that\u2019s what their journals say) to the cooking, the preachin\u2019, the praying, the singing, and the fellowship with other family and friends.\u00a0 Today, we did the same thing, albeit with automobile and already prepared food.\u00a0 The Church is now located right down the road and is now called Newberry Cumberland Presbyterian Church, after the family who donated the land and since it\u2019s relocation, it has indoor plumbing (although the outhouses are still on the property).\u00a0 But one thing has not changed\u2026.\u201dwe commenced preachin\u2019, praying and singing.\u201d\u00a0 I think our Ancestors would be proud!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Worship and fellowship are held in the little church on the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 4<sup>th<\/sup> Sundays of each month at 11 A.M.<\/p>\n<p>**** Mary Newton Maxwell is a diligent genealogist and historian.\u00a0 We are connected by my great-grandmother mentioned above, Avis Maxwell McCreary.\u00a0 Before she retired, Mary did genealogy research for two hours every morning before going to her job at 8 A.M.\u00a0 I sent Mary a picture of my great-grandmother Avis .\u00a0 I remarked that the old lady looked to be part Indian because of her black hair.\u00a0 There was silence.\u00a0 Finally, Mary quietly said, \u201cCharlcy, look at that picture again.\u00a0 She has on a black bonnet.\u201d\u00a0 So much for my observation skills!<\/p>\n<p>The Weatherford Public Library has copies of journals (called day books) of family members and other Parker County pioneers.\u00a0 Mary was allowed to copy them. She transcribed and bound the journals. The winter of 2001 was frigid and icy.\u00a0 I stayed inside for days at a time reading those journals. \u00a0The minutes of the Newberry Cumberland Presbyterian Church are also there.<\/p>\n<p>Mary is an excellent writer.\u00a0 I recommend her book, \u201cSmiley,\u201d which can be purchased from Amazon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My paternal grandmother, Lenora McCreary Williams, was born and grew up in Parker County, Texas.&nbsp; She referred to the land as rolling prairie.
