The five-year-old entered kindergarten with bright eyes and a wide smile.\u00a0 He looked around the room with a curious expression that seemed to say he was ready to learn and he would have fun.\u00a0 He did learn and he did have fun. He was a quick learner always eager to go on the next new thing on the agenda.<\/p>\n

A treat for the children was a ride on the local fire truck. (This was 35 years ago.\u00a0 The parents did have to sign a permission form.)\u00a0 The children looked forward to it every year.\u00a0 It was a big deal.<\/p>\n

Loading up to ride the fire truck<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

After the ride, the children drew a picture and dictated a story about the experience to my aide or to me.\u00a0 The little boy told me to begin his story \u201cTo ????\u201d\u00a0 I had no idea what he said.\u00a0 I asked, \u201cTo whom?\u201d\u00a0 He repeated it.\u00a0 I asked him to say it more slowly.\u00a0 He said it again carefully enunciating every syllable.\u00a0 I was still clueless.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to spell that.\u201d\u00a0 The look he gave me was a combination of surprise, disappointment, and exasperation.\u00a0 He thought I was supposed to know everything.<\/p>\n

He sighed deeply. He asked in a slow, thoughtful voice, \u201cWell then, can you spell Jose?\u201d\u00a0 Yes, I could spell Jose.\u00a0 His story began, \u201cTo Jose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Children who did not ride a bus were usually met on the sidewalk outside the classroom after school.\u00a0 I went to his grandmother and told her what I thought he was trying to say.\u00a0 She immediately started laughing.\u00a0 \u201cThat is what he calls me.\u201d\u00a0 The mystery was solved.<\/p>\n

I met Jose at the open house a short time later.\u00a0 He was laughing as he approached me.\u00a0 He introduced himself and said, \u201cI am so glad you can spell my name.\u201d<\/p>\n

The boy continued happily throughout the year.\u00a0 He skipped happily into first grade the next year curious and eager.<\/p>\n

The boy was different.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t know he was different.\u00a0 The children didn\u2019t know he was different.\u00a0 He was the only black child in the<\/p>\n

school.\u00a0 That is the way it is supposed to be.<\/p>\n
